Description

Number 78 is a town house built in 1862, designed by the architect George Fowler Jones for himself. It is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building has two tall brick gable stacks and consists of three storeys, a basement, and attics.

The exterior includes a deep ashlar plinth with three basement windows below. The off-centre doorway features a six-panel door with an overlight and is flanked by ashlar pilasters within a segment-headed opening. To the left of the doorway, there is a pair of plain sash windows, and to the right, a single plain sash window, all set within segment-headed openings. These openings are connected by a moulded ashlar impost band. Above the doorway, there is a deeply-moulded sill band that links three plain segment-headed sashes. Further up, another bracketed ashlar sill band connects three smaller plain sashes with segment heads. The building is topped with an elaborate bracketed eaves cornice and two small segment-topped dormers with plain sashes.

The steps leading to the entrance are flanked by spearhead railings that continue along the street front. The interior has not been inspected.
