Description
The garden railings and gate piers at Number 65 (The Churchill) date from around 1840 and were made by John Walker of Walmgate for John Clough. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar and brick, featuring wrought and cast-iron elements. Along Bootham, there are nine rectangular piers connected by low stone copings with railings, except between the first and second piers from the left and between the third and fourth piers, where iron gates are located. The right-hand pair of gates appears to be a 20th-century replacement. The railings are topped with finials that have anthemion ornament. The piers feature semi-cylindrical caps, and their semicircular front elevations are carved with honeysuckle decoration. Additionally, the faces of the piers have incised Greek fret ornament. On the side bordering Grosvenor Terrace, there are no intermediate piers, and the railings are set on a brick wall with stone coping. These features contribute to the group value of Number 65 Bootham, The Churchill.
