Description
No. 52 on Front Street is a house that was formerly a shop, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of snecked red sandstone ashlar with smooth quoins, and dressed red sandstone on the sides. The roof is made of Welsh slate with a tile ridge and lead hip. The building is L-shaped, with two storeys and two bays facing Front Street.
The shop entrance is located on the corner and features a smooth quoined surround with a hollow chamfered lintel, still displaying the painted name of the grocer's shop established in 1863. The entrance has a bowed door with centrally glazed panels. To the left is a 20th-century shop window set in a 19th-century opening. The upper floor contains sash windows with glazing bars.
There is an additional entrance in the lane, which has a top-glazed six-panel door with a patterned fanlight. A stepped entrance down the slope features a plank door and sash windows with glazing bars. A cast-iron street sign on the corner reads "CHANDLERS LANE" and dates from 1896. The building is included for its group value.
