Description
The Holcot War Memorial is located at a road junction near the center of the village, where Back Lane branches off Moulton Road. It features a medieval-style cross made of Weldon stone, standing approximately 4 meters tall, with an intricate foliate head. The cross is mounted on a squat two-stage octagonal shaft, which rises from a square plinth atop a stepped octagonal base made of Derbyshire stone. Surrounding the base is a modern pebble surround with a kerb, which is not included in the listing.
Slate panels are set into the plinth. The front panel is inscribed with "THIS CROSS WAS GIVEN BY/ MRS E.L. DANIELS/ THE PATRON OF THIS LIVING." The rear face reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/. GREATER LOVE/ HATH NO MAN THAN THIS." The names of those who died in the war are listed on the other two faces, and the name of a villager who died in the Second World War has been added to the front panel.
