Description

The Wrangle War Memorial is located in a small circular island at the junction of Church Lane and Church End, near the Church of St Mary and St Nicholas, which is a Grade I listed building, and the Old Vicarage, a Grade II* listed building. The memorial is a Calvary cross made of Weldon Stone. It stands on a three-stepped base that is octagonal in shape, topped by an octagonal plinth. The base features a pyramidal pedestal from which the octagonal cross shaft rises, leading to a hooded Calvary scene.

On the western face of the cross, there is a carved figure of Christ, while the eastern side of the cross head depicts the Madonna and Child. Both the plinth and the top step of the base have inscriptions in black painted incised lettering on all four sides. The inscription on the west face reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/AND IN GRATEFUL/AND UNDYING MEMORY/OF THE 27 MEN FROM/WRANGLE/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/IN THE GREAT WAR/1914-1919./AND IN HONOUR OF ALL/THOSE WHO SERVED THEIR/KING AND COUNTRY./1939-1945/[NAMES]."

The northern side lists names followed by the phrase "MAY THEY REST IN PEACE/AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN/AND IN THE MORNING/WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." The eastern face also has a list of names, concluding with "LET LIGHT PERPETUAL/SHINE UPON THEM./AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM,/NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN." The southern face records additional names and ends with "REST ETERNAL GRANT TO/THEM O LORD./THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD/AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD."
