Description

The Wainfleet St Mary War Memorial Cross is located in the churchyard to the south-east of the Church of St Mary and faces west. This memorial, standing at 4.3 meters high, is a stone Calvary cross designed in the style of a traditional Lincolnshire wayside cross.

It features a broad two-stepped base that is square in plan, supporting a square plinth topped with a small octagonal pedestal. The cross-shaft is octagonal in section and is crowned with a carved hooded crucifix, displaying the figure of Christ on the western face of the cross-head.

Inscribed in incised lettering around the foot of the pedestal are the words (on the west face) IN/ THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE, (on the south face) OF THE MEN OF THIS, (on the north face) PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR, (on the west face) LIVES FOR FREEDOM IN THE, (on the south face) GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918.

On the plinth, the names of those who died in the First World War are recorded in applied metal lettering on a stone plaque set into the western face. Below this, on the top step of the base, the inscription REST ETERNAL GRANT THEM O LORD is incised. Additionally, on the southern face, a second plaque with applied metal lettering lists the names of those who died during the Second World War, framed by the inscription ALSO/ 1939-1945/ R.I.P.
