Description
The Deanshanger War Memorial is located near the east end of the Grade II-listed Church of Holy Trinity. Made of Weldon stone, it stands approximately 3 meters high and features a crucifix-cross with a well-modeled figure of Christ. The square-sectioned cross rises from a four-stage square base. The upper three stages are inscribed with "1914 – 1919/ TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ THEY DIED FOR US" in low relief. The lowest stage bears the inscription "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOUR AND GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF/ THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR," followed by 15 names, and notes that it was erected by the parishioners. On the rear, the uppermost stage is inscribed with "1939 – 1945," and the names of the Second World War casualties, which include six men and one woman, are listed on the lower stage.
In front of the memorial is an urn that was provided by the British Legion in 1963. The memorial is surrounded by a chain set on low posts.
