Description

Dovehouse Farmhouse is an early 17th-century house, originally a farmhouse, with a 19th-century extension and 19th and 20th-century alterations. The house is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a plain-tile roof and brick end stacks on stone bases. It is two storeys and an attic, with a cruciform plan and a three-window front. A two-storey central porch has a bargeboarded gable; it contains a fine 17th-century front door with a ribbed and studded design within a moulded wood surround. A 4-light casement window is above the doorway. Five-light casement windows with wood lintels are located on the ground and first floors to the left and right of the porch. A single-storey 19th-century extension to the right houses the kitchen, and a two-storey gabled stair turret is to the left. A two-storey wing extends to the rear.

The interior features chamfered cross-beam ceilings to the ground floor. The hall fireplace has a Tudor-arched bressumer with cut spandrels. A smaller fireplace of a similar style is in the ground floor room of the rear wing, incorporating a cambered, chamfered bressumer. A fine open-well staircase rises from the ground floor to the first floor, with turned balusters, a square newel post, and ball finials. The roof is largely original with ties and collars to principal rafters and two tiers of wind-braced purlins. The building is said to have been built as a manor house.
