Description
The Scremby with Grebby War Memorial is located beside the churchyard path to the north-east of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which is a Grade II* listed building, and opposite the Old Rectory, a Grade II listed building. This memorial features a plain stone Latin cross that has a reversed sword carved in low relief on the front face of the cross shaft. The cross shaft is square in section and rises from a square plinth that sits on a two-stepped, octagonal base.
The memorial includes inscriptions on the northern and eastern faces of the plinth, while the names of those who died are carved on the western face. The inscription on the northern face reads: "THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED IN THANKFUL/ REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE FROM THIS/ PARISH WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED/ AND ALSO OF ALL THOSE WHO FOUGHT/ AND DIED FOR ENGLAND/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE." The eastern face bears the inscription: "YE THAT LIVE ON/ MIDST ENGLAND'S PASTURES GREEN/ REMEMBER US AND THINK/ WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN."
