Description

Candelsby Hall is a house built in 1782, with extensions added in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring ashlar dressings and an asbestos slate roof with stone coped stepped gables. The building has two tall, partly external gable brick stacks and stands two storeys plus attics, presenting a three-bay front with the central bay slightly advanced. It has a plinth, a first-floor band, a dentillated modillion cornice, and a parapet with a moulded top, topped by four bulbous urns.

The central entrance features a panelled door with a traceried fanlight, set within a bow porch that has a semi-circular head and panelled reveals. On either side of the entrance are single blocked semi-circular headed openings, flanked by tall glazing bar sashes. The first floor contains three glazing bar sashes, and all openings are adorned with flat brick arches that include key-stones. Above the porch, there is a cast iron railed balcony, and the roof features three dormers with shaped lead roofs.

To the left of the main house is a two-storey, three-bay service range, while the right side includes a two-storey bow window with three glazing bar sashes on each floor. The interior of the house retains its shutters. Candelsby Hall was built for the Massingberds of Gunby.
