Description
The Western Stable Block at Gunby Hall is a stable building dating from 1736, with alterations made in 1917. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring ashlar dressings and a hipped pantile roof with lead details. The structure is two stories tall and has a five-bay front arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern, with the central bay slightly projecting. It includes a plinth, a first-floor band, and a dentillated eaves course.
The central entrance features a semi-circular arch with moulded ashlar impost blocks and a keystone inscribed with 'WM 1736'. There are planked double doors, flanked by pairs of glazing bar sash windows with segmental brick heads. On the first floor, there is a central oeil de boeuf window with an ashlar surround, flanked by two glazing bar sashes at the eaves level.
Atop the ridge, there is a clock tower made of weatherboard with a shaped lead roof, featuring a dentillated cornice and a bellcote supported by four panelled wooden columns. The clock, designed by the Adam brothers for Hook Place in Hampshire in 1778, was relocated here in 1917 to commemorate the return of Stephen Massingberd from the Great War. The clock has a painted circular face and is topped with a wrought iron and gilded weathervane.
