Description
The Littleton War Memorial is a limestone structure located in the churchyard of the Church of St Catherine, which is also a Grade II-listed building. It overlooks Main Road and faces Littleton Manor, another Grade II-listed property. The memorial features a stone Latin cross with a plain shaft and a three-stepped foot that is rectangular in shape. This foot is raised on a narrow plinth that measures approximately 2 meters wide and 0.3 meters deep. The plinth is flanked by short, narrow blocks on either side and is set upon an inscribed base, which in turn stands on a concrete platform.
The main inscription on the front face of the plinth is incised and painted black, reading: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY/ OF THOSE FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY/ DURING THE GREAT WAR." The years 1914 and 1919 are carved in relief on the front face of each flanking block. Additionally, the inscription on the front of the base, also in relief, states: "I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE," with the continuation on the rear reading: "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The names of four individuals commemorated by the memorial are incised and painted black on the rear of the plinth.
