Description

Monks Rest is a cottage, originally a priests’ house and school, dating from the 15th century, with alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The construction is timber-frame with flint and brick infill, with some sides encased in brick. Later additions are of brick and flint, and the roof is of old plain tiles. The cottage presents a small, two-bay 15th-century house with a wing extending to the rear along the road, and with a late 19th-century schoolroom at the far end. A large brick and flint chimney stack, with chequerwork detailing, stone dressings, and a brick upper part, dominates the centre of the road-facing gable end. To the right, the ground floor has been rebuilt, but the first floor retains close studding with flint infill and wattle and daub in the gable. To the left, the infill is brick, with a two-light casement just below the tie beam. Beside it is a section of the 18th-century wing, constructed of brick and some flint, with a 19th-century stack on its side. The churchyard side of the cottage is two storeys high with a cellar. The further bay projects outwards, with a door set into the roadside, and a 19th-century two-light casement window below. Other bays feature 19th-century five-light casements, and a two-light casement near the road end for the cellar. The first floor has a 19th-century two-light gabled dormer on the projecting bay, and two and three-light windows in the other bay. Medieval-style ridge tiles with decorative combs finish the roof.
