Description
The Castle Ashby War Memorial, made of Derbyshire stone, is located on a small green at the north end of the estate village, outside the Falcon Hotel. This tall, freestanding cross features a crosshead with lobed ends set atop an octagonal shaft, which rises from a square plinth on a three-stepped base. Inscriptions are displayed on grey stone tablets embedded in the plinth. The main inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF ENGLAND AND TO THOSE OF THIS PARISH WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE WAR 1914 – 1919. ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS." The names of those commemorated are listed on the other three plaques, organized by those killed in action, those wounded, and others who served.
