Description
The Wollaston and Strixton War Memorial is located on the east side of the village cemetery in Cobbs Lane, set within a bay created by the outward extension of the cemetery wall. Standing approximately 4 meters high, it features a Weldon stone wheel-head cross atop a tapering shaft. The shaft is mounted on an octagonal plinth, which in turn rests on a two-stepped octagonal base made of Derbyshire stone, complete with an outer kerb.
Each face of the plinth has a panel of Hopton Wood marble. The front panel bears the inscription: "ERECTED/ IN MEMORY OF/ WOLLASTON/ AND/ STRIXTON/ MEN WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR./ 1914 - 1918./ “FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH.” The names of the fallen are listed on the other panels. A panel on the front face of the upper step is inscribed with "1939 – 1945," while the rear panel reads "1914 – 1918." The names of those who died in the Second World War are inscribed on similar panels around the upper step, and additional names of First World War casualties were added in 2006.
