Description
West House and Cottage is a farmhouse and cottage combined under one roof, dating from the 18th century and early 19th century, possibly representing two separate builds. The structure is made of roughly dressed coursed sandstone with a stone slate roof. It stands two storeys high, featuring a three-bay house and a two-bay cottage to the right, with two rooms in depth.
The house has a central doorway with a part-glazed door set in a plain ashlar surround. Above the door, there is a sundial located in a blocked window opening, also framed with plain ashlar. The house features 16-pane sash windows with glazing bars, with ground floor windows in bays one and three having plain ashlar surrounds, while the first floor windows have ashlar lintels and sills.
The cottage has two first floor windows and one central ground floor window, all styled similarly to the first floor windows of the house. The building is adorned with shaped kneelers, ashlar copings, and has two end stacks and two ridge stacks. The cottage includes a gable entry. In the first half of the 19th century, the property was occupied by Joseph Alderson, who served as the agent to the lords of the manor of Arkengarthdale, as noted by a tombstone in St Mary's churchyard.
