Description

Clifton Farmhouse is a farmhouse and cottage, likely built in the late 18th century, now functioning as a single dwelling. The structure features coursed sandstone for the house and watershot coursed rubble for the cottage, topped with a stone slate roof that has a ridge chimney stack at the junction and gable chimneys. The building has a single pile plan, with each part consisting of two bays and two storeys. Each section is symmetrical, featuring a central doorway; the house on the left has a single-storey gabled porch covering its entrance, while the cottage on the right originally had a similar porch, which has since been removed, leaving only the gable line above the door. Both parts have two stepped triple-light windows on each floor, except for the square window to the right of the house's porch. The house also has an anciently blocked window of similar design between the two existing first-floor windows. At the left end, there is a range of farm buildings that have been altered and are not included in this listing. The rear wall, facing north, has one square window and three very small windows on the ground floor, and a two-light mullioned window on the first floor. Inside, each section has a stone staircase, and the house features a vaulted cellar with stone side shelves and a rectangular window at the front that has been blocked externally.
