BACUP, Deerplay, (off) BURNLEY ROAD Clifton Farmhouse

Farmhouse and cottage, probably later C18; now one dwelling. Coursed sandstone (house) and watershot coursed rubble (cottage), stone slate roof with ridge chimney stack at the junction and gable chimneys. Single pile plan, each part 2 bays. Two storeys; each part symmetrical with central doorway, that to the house on the left covered by a single-storey gabled porch, a similar porch to the cottage on the right having been removed leaving only the gable line over the door; and with 2 stepped triple-light windows on each floor (except that to right of porch of house, which is square), the house having in addition a similar window anciently blocked between these at 1st floor. (At the left end, breaking forwards, is a range of farmbuildings, altered and not included in the item). Rear (north facing) wall has at ground floor only one square window and 3 very small ones, at 1st floor one 2-light mullioned window. Interior: each part has a stone staircase, house has a vaulted cellar with stone side shelves and a rectangular window to the front blocked externally
