Description
Burwains is a farmhouse with an attached cottage, now combined into a single dwelling, dating back to 1642. The cottage is of the 18th century. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with large quoins, and has a stone slate roof. It follows a three-bay baffle-entry plan, with a projecting porch aligned with a ridge chimney at the junction of the first and second bays.
The two-storey porch has a triangular-headed doorway with a roll-moulded surround and carved spandrels on the lintel. Above the doorway is a deep datestone recess with a hoodmould, and at the first floor a recessed hollow-chamfered two-light mullion window with a hoodmould. A restored gable finial sits atop the porch. The first bay to the left has a single two-light flat-mullioned window on each floor, the lower with a hoodmould, and next to the porch is a small mid-level stairlight, now blocked. To the right of the porch, the second bay has a three-light window at the first floor, partially obscured by the porch, an inserted window to the right, and a two-light window at ground floor. The third bay has an inserted doorway under a hoodmould, a two-light stairwindow to the left (with a small stairlight above), and at first floor a three-light mullioned window with saddle bars.
At the rear, the first bay has a wide, chamfered doorway with a hoodmould (likely a former window), and a two-light window above with an altered mullion. The second bay, which forms the main house part, features a six-light window (missing alternate mullions) and a two-light firewindow (lacking the mullion), along with first-floor windows of four and two lights (lacking most mullions). The third bay has a six-light window on each floor, the lower lacking the centre mullion, and the upper lacking the second and fourth. All these rear windows have chamfered surrounds and recessed hollow-chamfered mullions, with those on the ground floor also featuring hoodmoulds. The ridge chimney and the third bay gable chimney have moulded cornices.
The north gable wall has a two-light window to the front room at ground floor and a small square window to the rear room at first floor. The attached cottage, situated at the left (south) end, is built of watershot squared sandstone and has a two-light flush mullion window on each floor, a plain doorway, and a gable chimney.
Inside the house, a moulded plaster date "1642" is visible on the wall at the lower end. There are two blocked doorways to the first bay under a former firehood, and two doorways in a corresponding position at the lower end. The parlour contains decorative features from the 17th and 18th centuries. The roof features kingpost trusses with angle struts, now exposed. Some internal doorways have raised lintels.
