Description
Hill End House is a house dating to the later 18th century, with alterations. It is constructed of dressed sandstone with a rubble rear, and has a stone slate roof. The building follows a double-depth, three-bay plan. It is two storeys high and generally symmetrical, with chimneys at both original gables. The left gable has stone coping with kneelers. The central doorway features a moulded architrave and cornice, with glazed and panelled double doors, a rectangular fanlight, and a small, modern corrugated sheet canopy. Above the doorway is a 12-pane sash window. The front has multiple-light flush-mullion windows on both floors; those to the left have 4 lights, and those to the right have 6 lights. The outer lights are fixed, with glazing bars, and the middle pair of lights are wider than the others. The upper left and lower right lights contain 12-pane sashes, while the others have been altered. A later 19th-century extension is located at the north end, and may represent remodelling. At the rear, a central three-stage stairwell window has small panes. The first floor has a 15-pane sash window at each end, and a four-light flush-mullion window in the first bay; the third light in this window contains a 12-pane sash. The ground floor of the first bay at the rear is covered by a large, modern lean-to. Inside, a central passage leads to a rear staircase, with two rooms on each side, although interior details were not inspected. The house was historically the home of the Smith family, who were woollen manufacturers.
