3/5 Church of St. James - - II
Church. 1840, probably by Edmund Sharpe. Squared sandstone, stone slate roof. Nave with short chancel, west steeple. Early English style. Three-span roof (belying single vessel interior); pilaster buttresses making 5 bays on south side, 4 on north side, the westernmost with small lancets at upper level (lighting the staircases), the others all with tall coupled lancets; east end has stepped triple lancet to chancel, single lancet each side (north side terminated at 4th bay). At west end 2-stage tower is partly embraced by pseudo-aisles (which are gabled), has 2-centred arched west door, 2 lancets above, gables on each side, octagonal drum and belfry with a lancet in each side, and short octagonal spire. Interior: except for porch incorporated in tower and staircases each side, and chancel and organ house at east end, a single vessel with flat ceiling supported by very slim iron columns rising through (panelled) galleries on 3 sides; galleries approached by 1/4-turn staircases with stick balusters and ramped handrails; chamfered 2-centred chancel arch and matching arch to organ house on south side; brass double candelabra attached to frieze of gallery; pitch pine pews at ground floor, box pews in gallery. Unusually unaltered example of early C19 church.
