Description

Higher Saxifield Farmhouse is a former laithe-house, likely built in the early 19th century, with subsequent enlargements and alterations. The structure features watershot coursed squared sandstone on the front, with the ends and rear made of random rubble. The northern angle and the lower part of the southeast angle have quoins, all of which are white-washed, while most openings have black-painted dressings. The farmhouse has a slate roof, while the laithe has a stone slate roof.

The building has a rectangular plan oriented east-west, consisting of one and three bays, with the house being double-depth and a one-bay single-depth extension at the east end. The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical facade with two windows on the left and two on the right, facing south but now accessed from the rear. To the left of the facade is a doorway with a plain surround, a simple cornice, and an altered door. Above the door is a one-light window, and to the right is a large window that was originally two-light but now lacks its mullion. Above this window is a smaller two-light window with a square-cut mullion. All windows have raised sills and plain surrounds, with altered glazing. The building features a cyma-moulded gutter cornice and a gable chimney to the right.

The set-back extension to the right has one window at ground floor and two above, similar to the main range. The laithe includes a segmental-arched former wagon doorway in the second bay, which is mostly blocked by a recently added farm building at right angles, and a one-light window next to the house. The rear of the farmhouse has a former back doorway that has been altered into a window, along with a one-light window at ground floor and two small square windows above, all with altered glazing. The extension has a doorway and window at ground floor and two windows above, with a loft doorway inserted in the upper part of the former wagon doorway. The west gable of the laithe has a lean-to addition and an owl-hole in the apex. The interior has not been inspected.
