Description
25 and 27 Marsden Road are a pair of cottages that were formerly part of a handloom weavers' colony, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The cottages have been slightly altered and are constructed of watershot coursed squared sandstone, which has been treated with white-painted strap-pointing, and feature a rendered gable. They have a stone slate roof and a double-depth plan, with each cottage being single-fronted; however, No. 25 is much wider than No. 27.
The cottages are two storeys tall and have a total of one and two windows respectively. The doorways are offset to the left of center, both featuring square-cut monolithic jambs and lintels, with No. 25's doorway being larger than that of No. 27. No. 25 has a mullioned window with two square lights at the ground floor, which has 20th-century four-pane glazing, along with two oblong windows under the eaves that now have 20th-century casements. No. 27 has a square window at the ground floor and an oblong two-light casement under the eaves, both fitted with 20th-century glazing. Both cottages have gable chimneys. The interior has not been inspected.
