Description
44 and 46 East Street are a pair of cottages dating from the late 18th century. They are constructed from local stone rubble with ashlar copings and an east finial, and are covered with double Roman clay tiles. The cottages feature brick end and intermediate chimney stacks. No. 44 is a single-storey building, while No. 46 has two storeys, both under the same roof.
The cottages have three-light timber casement windows of varying sizes, with exposed timber lintels. No. 44 has a plain door on the left with two stall-pane casement windows. No. 46 has a door to the right with a casement window above it, and additional casements to the left, one on each floor, with the lower one containing small panes. The east gable is more sophisticated, featuring an ashlar straight buttress and a ball finial on the coping, suggesting that it may have been converted from an earlier building. These cottages are listed as a rare survival and are noted for being unspoilt humble dwellings.
