Description
Berners is a cottage dated 1733, constructed from ham stone ashlar on a rubble plinth, with thatch between coped gables and brick end chimney stacks. It is two stories tall and has a symmetrical three-bay facade. The windows feature hollow chamfered mullions with leaded lights; the upper windows have some old glass, while the ground floor windows consist of three lights and the upper windows have two lights. A continuous label runs along the ground floor, interrupted by a segmental pediment above the central doorway, which is inscribed with "1733 William and Mary Barter." The entrance features an early plain boarded door set in a plain chamfered opening, accessed by three steps.
On the east gable, there is a single light window with a label, and on the west gable, there is a two-light window with an extended hood mould. Inside, the cottage has an old fireplace with intact ovens in the east wall, accompanied by a stone spiral staircase. There is also a small stone fireplace from the 18th century in the west wall. The interior features fielded panelling on the dadoes and window seats, deep chamfered beams with run-out stops, '6'-frame collar trusses, and elm floorboards. The partitions are in their early positions, though there are modern rear windows. The Barters, or Barton as noted in the Church Register, married in 1733 and are recorded as having rebuilt the dwelling house.
