Description

West Coker House is a house that consists of various builds from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of ham stone ashlar with carved work and has a Welsh slate roof with a stone slate base course. The main roof is hipped with projecting coped gables and some parapets, along with stone chimney stacks. The house is two storeys with an attic and features a 7-bay irregular main facade.

Bays 1 to 3 represent an early 19th-century section, featuring plain sash windows with single dividing bars in bays 1 and 2, while bay 3 has an oval window on the ground floor above which is a margined staircase window. Bay 4 is the first part of the main block, appearing to be a late 19th-century addition, with an ornamental angled bay window that has plain sashes, and an attic window in the gable above. Bay 5 has margined sashes on each level and a 20th-century flat-roofed dormer. Bay 6, also a late 19th-century addition, projects and features a quasi-shell hood over the doorway with two flanking sashes in an early art nouveau style. Above, there are two plain sashes in raised surrounds flanking a coat of arms, with a swept string course leading to a decorated attic window. Bay 7 is likely an 18th-century fragment, with a plain sash below and a 12-pane sash above, complemented by an eaves cornice.

There is a single-storey bay projecting to the east and a possibly refronted 18th-century outbuilding to the west, which is now used as offices. The house has historical connections with the Almshouses and Cross House and was a private school in the late 19th century.
