Description
Nos. 586 and 588 on Preston Road are a pair of weavers' cottages dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. They feature a watershot coursed sandstone facade with rubble sides and rear, and have quoins and a slate roof with gable chimneys. The cottages are designed in a double pile, 2-bay plan and stand 2½ storeys high, including a basement. The design is symmetrical, with coupled stone doorcases at the center. Each cottage has one window on the ground and first floors, all with plain stone cases; No. 586 has sash windows, while No. 588 has altered windows. The basement loomshop windows are partly blocked, with lugs for shutters still visible at No. 588. The rear of the cottages features partly blocked 3-light basement windows and basement doors, while above, there is an oblong window opening on each floor of each cottage (with altered glazing) and small modern bathroom windows near the corners.
