Description

The Lord Nelson Inn is a public house that was originally a farmhouse, dated 1668 on the porch. It has been altered and extended over time. The building is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with quoins and features a slate roof. Its F-plan has been modified by a later addition between the wing and the porch.

The inn has two storeys and a prominent 2-storey gabled porch located at the junction of the second and third bays. This porch includes a chamfered segmental-arched doorway, with the lintel inscribed in relief with "1688". The first-floor window features two round-headed lights with moulded surrounds and remnants of a hoodmould. On the right side, there is an inserted window at ground floor and a small peep window at first floor, while altered windows are present on each floor to the right. To the left, a large gabled addition overlaps the corner of the porch, showcasing quoins, a 3-light flush-mullion window at the ground floor of the gable, and a sash window above. The gable of the left wing, which is set back and overlapped by the addition, has a similar flush-mullion window at the ground floor, with a dripmould above it that extends around the corner over a blocked doorway in the return wall. At the first floor, there is a 4-light double chamfered mullion window with a hoodmould.

Other features of lesser interest include altered chimneys. Inside, the layout has been changed to an open-plan design, featuring imitation quarter-round moulded beams. However, the wing retains a 2-light double-chamfered mullion window in what was once an external re-entrant wall, along with a cross-corner fireplace that has a large cambered stone lintel.
