Description
Huggarts Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century and has been altered, with an addition on the left end. It is constructed from sandstone random rubble that has been rendered and painted white, topped with a slate roof and brick chimneys. The building features a three-bay baffle-entry plan, which is now double-depth, with the first two bays having a full-length outshut and a two-bay wing at the left end, which is not included in the listing.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a wide single-storey gabled porch aligned with a ridge chimney at the junction of the second and third bays, with a door that is offset to the right and an altered window above. There are two windows on each floor to the left; the lower window has been altered, while the upper windows are 9 and 4-pane sashes. The right gable wall features a buttress, a doorway behind it, and a two-light double-chamfered mullion window beyond. The rear of the building has various small openings.
Inside, the housepart in the second bay has two large beams that are now boxed. The third bay, which is currently used as a store, has an axial partition made of post and rail timber framing with two segmental-headed doorways and wattle-and-daub panelling. There is a large lateral beam with a cyma-stopped chamfer and some re-used timbers, possibly cruck blades. The interior also includes a rectangular stone fireplace with a chamfered surround and two blocked windows: a two-light mullioned window in the partition to the second bay and a three-light window at the first floor of the gable.
