Description

Stanley Mill is a cotton weaving mill, dating to 1891, and has undergone alterations. The building is constructed of rock-faced sandstone blocks with some ashlar, and has a slate roof with glazed north-lights.

The mill occupies a large rectangular footprint, filling a block bordered by Heath Street to the north, Cleaver Street to the south, and Swinless Street to the east. A storeyed warehouse and engine house are situated at the western end, while an office block sits in front of the north end of this range.

The main weaving shed, two storeys high and including a basement, has 18:3:3 windows. It features vertical-rectangular windows on both floors, mostly with nine panes and incorporates a cast-iron fire-escape above the ninth window. The single-storey office block, fronting the first eight windows, presents five windows and a round-headed doorway, topped with a band and parapet. Downspouts are positioned to the right of each opening. A wagon doorway, with a cast-iron lintel lettered "STANLEY MILL," is recessed slightly at the right-hand end. An added screen wall connects the corner of this office block with the corner of the engine house.

The three-window gabled engine house, made of ashlar with raised rusticated quoins, projects slightly. It has a ground-floor arcade with three tall round-headed arches, imposts, and keystones (a doorway flanked by windows, with altered door and glazing). The first floor features vertical-rectangular windows, and the gable bears a cruciform plaque reading "18 / STANLEY MILL / 91", with gable coping and kneelers. The three-window boiler house, slightly set back, has three wagon doorways at ground level with panelled cast-iron lintels, low segmental-headed windows above, and vertical-rectangular windows at the first floor. A square-section chimney plinth and a tapered circular chimney are attached to the rear right-hand corner of the boiler house, the chimney missing its cornice.

The shed has side walls with high parapets and 25 rainwater hoppers and downspouts. The mill is considered a good example of a Burnley weaving mill. It forms a group with the Stable Block on the opposite side of Cleaver Street.
