Description
The commemorative fountain in Queen's Park, dated 1893, serves as a monument to the gift of land by Sir John Hardy Thursby, Bart. in 1888 for the creation of Queen's Park, which opened in 1893. It is designed in the Jacobean-Renaissance style and constructed from sandstone ashlar, rendered brick, and polished pink granite. The fountain features a wide circular bowl made of sandstone ashlar, lined with rendered brick, and has a moulded surround with octagonal piers at the cardinal points topped with ball finials. At the center is a sandstone dome supported by four pairs of polished granite Ionic colonnettes on a square stone plinth. The plinth has panelled sides and diagonal piers with a moulded cornice. The dome includes a frieze that matches the plinth's cornice and is topped with a large obelisk finial. The front and rear panels of the plinth display bronze plaques that commemorate the land gift and the park's opening by the donor on 1 July 1893.
