Description
The Mackenzie Memorial in Thompson Park is a Grade II listed memorial dedicated to Sir James Mackenzie, a renowned local doctor, and was created around 1931. It features a bronze bust by F. Roslyn, which is set in a pink granite niche that is mounted in a sandstone ashlar wall. The wall measures approximately 2 meters long, 0.5 meters deep, and 3 meters high, with stepped sides and top. The niche is round-headed and adorned with a bronze oak-leaf garland at the top. The life-sized bust sits on a pedestal that bears raised lettering, which reads: "SIR JAMES / MACKENZIE / M.D., LL.D, F.R.S., F.R.C.P. / 1833-1925 / WHO ACHIEVED FAME / BY HIS RESEARCHES / IN CONNECTION WITH / DISEASES OF THE HEART / AND WAS FROM / 1879 TO 1907 / A GENERAL PRACTITIONER / IN BURNLEY".
