Description
The bridge over the Leeds to Liverpool Canal is a public road bridge located on Colne Road in Burnley. It was built around 1790 to 1796, designed by engineer Robert Whitworth, and was widened between 1862 and 1871. The bridge is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features a semi-elliptical arch made of rusticated voussoirs, along with a plain band and a parapet that has ridged coping. Originally, the bridge was approximately 8 meters wide, but it was widened to about 12 meters by adding to the east side in a matching style, although the upper part of this addition is now covered by a footway.
