Description
Shorey Well is a former public well located in the garden of Burnley College Adult Education Centre. Originally situated on the east side of the River Brun, opposite Dawson Square, the well structure was renewed in 1736 and was moved to its current location around 1881. It is made of sandstone rubble and features a roughly-hewn monolithic rectangular basin, although the front of the basin is now damaged. The well is set into a short low rubble bank that is approximately 2 meters long and 0.5 meters high, with a simple recess and plain lintel. This well commemorates the former only source of pure water in St Peter's hamlet and is part of a group with the Cross of St Paulinus and the base of the former market cross.
