Description
The Cross of St Paulinus is located in the garden of Burnley College Adult Education Centre. It is a market cross, likely erected around 1295 in the former market place to the east of the Church of St Peter. The cross was moved to Godley Lane around 1617 and then relocated to its current site in 1881. It is made of roughly-hewn millstone grit and stands on a low chamfered square base. The cross is rectangular in section and approximately 3 meters high, tapering towards a damaged wheel-head top. This top features a small raised hemisphere in the center of each face but is missing the horizontal spokes and outer ring, with only the stumps remaining. Despite its mutilated state and being out of its original context, it is a rare and significant historical artifact in this county.
