Railings, Gate Piers And Gate To Burnley College Adult Education Centre

The railings, gate piers, and gate to Burnley College Adult Education Centre were likely built in 1873 by William Waddington. They are associated with the grounds of a former grammar school. The structure features a low sandstone rubble wall with chamfered coping, complemented by cast-iron railings and gates. These elements enclose the west, north, and parts of the east and south sides of a rounded-triangular plot.

In front of the school’s doorway, there is a pair of simple monolithic Gothic-style gate piers topped with pyramidal caps adorned with brattished ornament. The gates consist of simple cylindrical bars and dog-bars, both sets featuring circular medallion finials with Tudor-rose designs. The railings flanking the gateway match in style, while those surrounding the triangular garden to the north of the school have spike finials and spear-head standards. This structure is part of a group with the former grammar school, now known as Burnley College Adult Education Centre.
