Gates, Piers And Railings To South Of Monkwearmouth College Swan Street Centre

The gates, gate piers, and railings located to the south of Monkwearmouth College on Swan Street were constructed around 1925. They serve as the entrance to what was originally a grammar school and is now a tertiary college. The structure features brick piers with painted concrete dressings, along with wrought-iron gates and railings.

There are four square piers that create vehicle and pedestrian entrances at the center of the building. The two central piers have plinths and high corniced stepped coping, while a corniced beam connects the bands of the central piers to the slightly lower corniced coping of the outer square piers, which also have plinths. The central double gates and side single gates are made of square-section iron, adorned with spiral finials on the principal bars. The upper sections feature diagonal bracing framed by double bars, and the lower sections have central double bars with circles placed at intervals along the top, central, and bottom horizontal bands. The spike-headed railings include panels with a similar design pattern at intervals and are set within panels on a low segmental-headed wall.
