Description

The Coal Staithe at Wearmouth Colliery, dating from around 1900 with later alterations, is a significant structure located on the south side of Wreath Quay Road in Sunderland. It features brick piers and platform facings, with the original wooden superstructure now lost. The coal staithe consists of three graduated sets of tall, wide brick piers that rise in three stages, supporting a brick-faced platform that extends from the high ground of the colliery to a point high above the shore. This platform once held a wooden superstructure that supported railway lines, allowing coal waggons to tip coal directly into the holds of ships. It is notable as the last surviving coal staithe on the River Wear, where once the banks were lined with similar structures used by local collieries for loading ships. The coal staithe is included for its historical interest.
