Description

SUNDERLAND

NZ3957 WREATH QUAY ROAD 920-1/11/247 (South side (off)) 04/07/94 Coal Staithe at Wearmouth Colliery

II

Coal staithe. c1900 with later alteration. Brick piers and platform facings; wood superstructure lost. 3 graduated sets of tall, wide brick piers rise in 3 stages to support a brick-faced platform extending from the high ground of Wearmouth Colliery to a point high above the shore. Formerly a wood superstructure on the platform supported railway lines from which coal waggons could tip coal directly into ships' holds. This is the last surviving coal staithe on the Wear, where once each bank was lined by staithes from which the many local collieries loaded ships. Included for historical interest.
