Description
The Royal Naval College South Gates and Railings, located on the south side of the grounds, were constructed in the 19th century. These tall cast iron railings feature leaf-head standards set on a Portland stone plinth. They are aligned along a north-south axis and are flanked by four square cast iron piers adorned with decorative motifs of thistles, roses, trefoils, and crowns. The main entrance includes a double gate with wrought iron cresting and maritime symbols, along with single side gates. The piers are topped with ogee wrought iron caps that support lamps. Further to the west, in front of the Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital, the railings are punctuated by stone piers at intervals. On the axis of the Seamen's Hospital, there is a cast iron double entrance gate hung from stone piers designed as arches, featuring wide pilasters and an entablature, along with a small cast iron gate set within the arch.
