Description
The mausoleum is located in the north-east part of the former burial ground of the Seamen's Hospital and dates back to 1749. It is a small, single-storey building with three bays, constructed from multicoloured stock brick. The structure features a stone cornice and a blocking course, with a central open pediment. There are three finely-gauged round brick arches, with the centre arch being larger and having a stone spring band. The left arch serves as an entrance, while the other two are unglazed windows. A stone plinth supports the building. The rear elevation also has two similar arches and a flight of steps leading down to a vault, which is now sealed. The cartouche in the pediment at the front bears the inscription, "5th July 1749. John Meriton Pensioner was ye first Man Buried in this Ground." Additionally, there are many 19th-century memorial tablets attached to the walls.
