Description
The Former Devonport Pathological School is a pathological laboratory built between 1926 and 1929 by Sir Edwin Cooper. It features reddish brown brick in English bond with Portland stone dressings and flat roofs, arranged in a quadrangular plan and designed in a classical style. The front elevation consists of two-storey, five-bay ranges set behind a one-storey, nine-bay range that extends to the sides. The one-storey range has a Doric portico in antis, flanked by 24-pane sash windows set in square-headed stone architraves, with a stone cill band and parapet band. The two-storey range has a bold stone cornice and windows set in square-headed tile architraves, with a central keyed stone architrave featuring a garlanded surround. Similar windows are found in tile architraves on the sides and rear of this block. Each one-storey side elevation has a nine-window range (to the outer sides) with oval windows and flat brick arches over 24-pane sashes. The rear elevation includes a two-storey block with small windows set in tile architraves and a tall brick stack behind the one-storey range with a stone parapet. This section has three semi-circular tile arches leading to garages, flanked by a bracketed hood over a doorway, which is accompanied by three 6-pane windows with flat brick arches on either side. Inside, the building features a marble hall with pilasters and a moulded cornice leading to a vaulted corridor, as well as a turned-baluster open-well staircase.
