Description

Numbers 8, 9 and the linking block known as "Spread Eagle Yard" is an early 19th-century building made of stucco. The central linking block is four storeys high and features one window. It has wide side pilasters on the second and third floors that support a low, pedimented parapet. Each floor has a three-light recessed sash window with a plain reveal. The second floor has a moulded string that rests on a scrolled keystone of a round-arched, two-storey carriage entrance, which includes a moulded architrave and panelled impost blocks. Above the string is a tablet inscribed with "SPREAD EAGLE YARD." The building has three-storey side wings, each with two windows on the front and one curved window in slightly set back convex quadrant returns to the central piece. The recessed sash windows have glazing bars, although the ground floor windows of No 9 have been replaced. Number 8 features a somewhat altered mid-19th-century shop front on the ground floor, while No 9 has a first-floor band and a modern door. The "Spread Eagle" was a former coaching inn.
