Description
The Spread Eagle Hotel, located at 20 High Street in Jedburgh, features a later 18th century facade that incorporates a much earlier tower to the southwest, along with 19th century additions to the rear. This three-storey, five-bay rendered inn has two additional bays to the southwest, with painted ashlar margins and an extended rubble stable range at the rear, which is currently in a dilapidated state.
The southeast elevation facing High Street consists of a five-bay main block with regular fenestration. The second and third bays from the right feature a double doorpiece supported by engaged Tuscan columns, topped with a heavy cornice and elaborate decorative cast-iron cresting. A carved eagle is attached to the pier above the door, which has panelled doors with blocked rectangular fanlights. To the right of the entrance is a bipartite window, while to the left are two single windows. The upper floor windows have moulded architraves, and the second-floor windows are almost square and set hard under the eaves. The name "SPREAD EAGLE HOTEL" is displayed in large applied letters across the entire block between the first and second floors. The two bays of the earlier tower are recessed to the left, in line with No 18, and feature smaller windows, with a panelled door in the bay to the right at ground level.
The building has four-pane timber sash and case windows, rebuilt brick stacks, and grey slate roofing. There is a light well to the rear that leads to the stable range, and the rear facades are very irregular.
Inside, the hotel has been much altered and adapted, but evidence of the earlier tower can be seen in the thick walls to the southwest.
