Description

The Thompson Memorial, located in the center of The Green in Southwick, is a lamp standard memorial dedicated to Robert Thompson, erected around 1912. The memorial features a cast-iron fluted Corinthian column on a base, adorned with a low relief portrait panel and an inscription that honors Robert Thompson, who served as Chairman of the local committee for 25 years, as well as the restoration of The Green in 1912. Decorative frames are positioned on each side of the column. The memorial is topped with scroll brackets that support a tall finial and two arched arms, from which bowl lamps are suspended. Additionally, fluted cast-iron posts with bud finials are placed approximately 4 meters to the north and south of the memorial to prevent vehicles from entering the path. The founder's plaque indicates that it was made by JAS Allan Snr & Son Ltd. at the Elmbank Foundry in Glasgow.
