Description
The walls, gates, and railings surrounding the Church of Holy Trinity in Sunderland date from the 19th century and are designated as a group value context. The churchyard walls enclose three sides of the churchyard, with gates, piers, and railings located on the east side. The western wall has been rebuilt due to road improvements that truncated the churchyard.
The walls are constructed from limestone rubble with sandstone ashlar coping, while the piers are made of ashlar. The northern and southern walls feature limestone and sandstone rubble, with some areas patched with brick and topped with gabled ashlar coping. The eastern wall, which faces Church Bank, has an ashlar top course and gabled coping, supported by angled rear walls for the railings.
The square piers have plinths and stepped gabled coping, and the gates are adorned with pierced roundel finials on the frame uprights, along with bud and spike dog bar finials, although many of the gate finials are damaged. The railings are spike-headed and feature scroll finials on some of the principal uprights.
