Description

Monkwearmouth College Swan Street Centre (west building) is a former grammar school, built around 1925. It is constructed of brick with painted concrete dressings and has a roof made of plain tiles. The building is designed in a symmetrical neo-Greek style and is one storey high, with two-storey entrance blocks on either side of the center.

The facade features a pattern of windows arranged in a 1:5:3:12:3:5:1 configuration. There is a painted plinth at the base. The projecting entrance pavilions have painted central bays that contain six-panelled double doors framed by architraves. Above these doors are stepped corniced panels leading to the sills of first-floor sash windows, which are also framed by corniced architraves. The flanking bays have tripartite sashes with gauged brick flat arches and projecting painted sills, all set within bays defined by giant pilasters adorned with lotus and acanthus leaf capitals. These support an entablature featuring a frieze with patera, a central pediment, and a blocking course.

The lower one-bay end pavilions are plain and also feature similar pediments, friezes, and blocking courses, with sashes in them. The intermediate sections have fixed lights with central pivoting sections and projecting stone sills, situated below a deep eaves band and gutter cornice. All windows are fitted with glazing bars. Each end of the building has a short set-back blank section. The hipped roof has a recessed hip over the set-backs, with hipped roofs over the entrances that include plain chimneys rising from the returns of the blocking course, as well as high pedimented louvred square ridge ventilators.
