Description
The West Block of Sidmouth Street School is a primary school built between 1911 and 1912 by Joseph H. Hirst, the City Architect, and altered in the late 20th century. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings, and has gabled and hipped slate roofs surmounted by an octagonal wooden bell turret with a lead dome and weather vane. The building also has two side wall stacks, one of which has a coped top. It is two storeys high and features a symmetrical facade of six windows by nine windows. The windows are mainly glazing bar sashes, with those on the first floor having moulded lintels and keystones.
The east front, which faces the playground, has polychrome quoins, a moulded first-floor sill band, and dentilated eaves. A recessed central section contains four 28-pane sashes, with a round-arched entrance flanked by two windows below, although this entrance is now largely obscured by a late 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed addition. The end pavilions, three windows deep, have large dentilated semicircular pediments incorporating a round window with festoons. Each pavilion has a 20-pane sash, with an ashlar panel and a plain round window below.
The south return features a projecting three-storey wing with a dentilated semicircular pediment incorporating two square glazing-bar windows. There are two 28-pane sashes above and four 20-pane sashes below. An end pavilion with three windows on each floor is positioned to the right, while a slightly projecting triple bay and a square, extruded corner with a similar window are located to the left. Above the triple bay are three 28-pane sashes, and below is a round window flanked by pairs of recessed double doors. One door lintel is inscribed "Junior Girls". To the left of this section is a slightly set-back range with a 20-pane sash with a moulded lintel and keystone, and a 12-pane window below.
The rear, on the west side, has a central recess with six 28-pane sashes on each floor. A wing to the left has a 20-pane sash and a 12-pane window below.
The interior includes corridors lined with glazed tiles and a central first-floor hall featuring a segmental vault.
