Description

Newland Methodist Church and an adjoining meeting room were built in 1928, with later alterations in the late 20th century, designed by Sir Alfred Gelder. The building is constructed of brick with concrete and ashlar dressings, featuring hipped slate roofs and an octagonal slate dome to the main block, topped with an octagonal turret with volutes. The architectural style is Edwardian Baroque.

The building features a plinth, string course, eaves band, and coped parapets. It is two storeys high with an octagonal main block and square pavilions at each corner. The front elevation, facing Cottingham Road, has a recessed pedimented centre flanked by square pavilions. A central round-headed traceried window is set within a moulded surround, with a bracketed sill and an elongated double keystone, topped by a supplementary segmental pediment on brackets. Flanking this are transomed two-light windows with moulded surrounds. Below, a projecting rusticated flat-roofed porch features a central recessed doorway. Glazed double doors have a margin glazed overlight. Smaller doorways are located on either side of the porch, also with margin glazed double doors and a panel above. The side pavilions have transomed two-light, margin glazed windows with moulded aprons, with similar windows to their returns. The left return, facing Newland Avenue, displays a central first-floor elevation mirroring the front, with three transomed two-light windows below. A pavilion on the left has a transomed margin glazed two-light window and a moulded doorcase with cornice and a pair of half-glazed doors with glazing bars. Another return features a two-light, margin glazed window with apron. The rear elevation has a half-hipped two-storey projection with paired sashes on each floor.

The adjoining meeting room, also two storeys high, has a canted corner topped with two 12-pane sashes, and below, three similar sashes.

The interior of the main church features a square central space with canted corners, each with pedimented concrete doorcases and half-glazed doors opening onto a shallow steel-framed dome with panelled ribs and a central boss surrounded by a ring of lights. A serpentine, bow-fronted cantilevered gallery runs along three sides, featuring an egg-and-dart band and wreaths. Two columns frame the rear, while single doors with pedimented wooden cases are located at the corners. Underneath the gallery, three double doors are framed by pedimented concrete doorcases. Late 20th-century partitions have created side rooms. At the front, a panelled segmental arch leads to a stage and dais with fretted wooden screens and a round-arched wooden rail. Original fittings include linked wooden chairs with plywood seats.
