Description

Newland Homes, William Richardson House is a former orphanage designed by W.H. Bingley of Hull, built in 1896 and funded by William Richardson. The building is constructed of yellow brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with a single ridge and two gable stacks.

The exterior includes a plinth, a ground-floor lintel band, a first-floor sill band, and traceried bargeboards with collars on the central gable. It is two storeys high with a six-window range. The windows are mainly plain sashes. The projecting centre has two sashes with a shaped datestone and lintel above, displaying the name of the building. The left return angle features a single sash, with two sashes on either side. Below, there is a central hipped square bay window with two sashes and a smaller sash on either side. To the left, in the return angle, is a hipped porch canopy supported by wooden posts, covering a single window and door, with another single sash to its left and two sashes to the right. The rear of the building has two gabled wings.

Historically, this complex of orphan homes and ancillary buildings was constructed between 1895 and 1902 by the Port of Hull Society, which was founded in 1821. The society established the Sailors’ Orphans Institution in 1836 but did not have a permanent home until the Park Street orphanage was built in 1868-1869, largely funded by Sir Titus Salt of Saltaire. The Park Street orphanage was sold in 1897, by which time all the children had moved to the new complex on Cottingham Road.
