Description
Newland Homes, Sir Titus Salt House is a former orphanage designed by W.H. Bingley of Hull, built in 1896 and funded by Sir Titus Salt. The building is constructed of yellow brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof with two ridge stacks and two side wall stacks.
The exterior includes a plinth, a first-floor band, and traceried bargeboards with collars on the main gables. It is two storeys high with an eight-window range, where most windows are plain sashes. The centre features a through-eaves dormer with two sashes, flanked by a single sash on the left and a paired sash on the right. Below the dormer, there is a full-width lean-to canopy covering a central square bay window with three lights. To the left of the bay window is a half-glazed door, and to the right is a commemorative plaque. The gabled wings each have two windows on both floors.
Historically, this complex of orphan homes and ancillary buildings was constructed between 1895 and 1902 by the Port of Hull Society, which was founded in 1821. The society established the Sailors’ Orphans Institution in 1836 but lacked a permanent home until the Park Street orphanage was built in 1868-1869, largely funded by Sir Titus Salt. The Park Street orphanage was sold in 1897, by which time all the children had moved to the new complex on Cottingham Road.
