Description

Newland Homes, St Andrews House is a former orphanage designed by W.H. Bingley of Hull, built in 1897. The building is constructed of yellow brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof, which includes two side wall stacks, one ridge stack, and two gable stacks.

The exterior showcases a plinth, a first-floor band, and traceried bargeboards with collars on the main gable. It is two storeys tall and has a six-window range. The windows are mostly plain sashes. The central section projects and features a paired sash window under a segment-headed label mould that frames a commemorative plaque. On either side of this central feature are two additional windows. Below, there is a square hipped bay window with two sashes, flanked by smaller single windows. To the left, there is a sash window followed by a triangular bay window with two sashes. To the right, a hipped porch is located in the return angle, supported by wooden posts. The porch contains a half-glazed door and a single window, with another single window to its right.

This complex of orphan homes and ancillary buildings was constructed between 1895 and 1902 by the Port of Hull Society, which was founded in 1821 for the religious instruction of seamen. The society established the Sailors’ Orphans Institution in 1836 but did not have a permanent home until the Park Street orphanage was built in 1868-1869, largely funded by Sir Titus Salt of Saltaire. The Park Street orphanage was sold in 1897, by which time all the children had been moved to the new complex on Cottingham Road.
